Alta Marie Mueggenborg, 91, of Okarche died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City.

A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, 2011, with both services at Holy Trinity Church in Okarche. The Rev. Sam Licanda and Deacon Max Schwarz will officiate. Arrangements are under direction of Huber - Benson Funeral Home in El Reno.

Alta was the first born of Ignatius and Maudie Meyer Gilles on a cold, wintry day, Dec. 23, 1919, northeast of Okarche.

She attended Holy Trinity School. The oldest of 10 children, Alta worked very hard and took care of her six brothers and three sisters. She also cared for her parents in their later years of life.

She married Vincent George Mueggenborg on Aug. 10, 1937.Vince and Alta raised 11 children north of Okarche. She and Vince both served as volunteers for the community, county, Holy Trinity School and Church.

After Vince’s death in 1977, Alta continued volunteering for numerous community organizations and her church. Alta served as Sacristan and Eucharistic minister for Holy Trinity for over 40 years. She opened and closed the church daily and lovingly attended many other duties necessary for the priest and deacon to officiate the masses, baptism, weddings, funerals, benediction services, Lenten services and communion services.

Alta was a recipient of many awards including: Catholic Daughter of the Year, the Papal Award in 2005, the Pontifical Award Pro-Ecclesia Lay Person Award and American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include daughter - in - law, Faye Mueggenborg, Joe’s wife of Piedmont; daughter, Louise and husband Wiley Hubbard of Okarche; daughter, Carol and husband Bud Schroeder of Kingfisher; daughter, Edna Edwards of Okarche; daughter, Judy and husband Jim Grellner of Kingfisher; daughter, Arlene and husband Doug Schroeder of Stafford, Texas; son, Karl and wife Karla Merveldt Mueggenborg of Okarche; daughter-in-law, Joan Rother Mueggenborg, Andy’s wife of Okarche, and son, Jerry and wife Annisa Fortman Mueggenborg of Surrey Hills. The affectionately named Grandma “M” leaves behind 146 grandchildren and spouses; great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and one brother, Gene Gilles of El Reno.

Alta was preceded in death by her husband, Vince, four sons, and two daughters-in-law, Joseph Francis, Raymond Harold and wife Marilou Kremier Mueggenborg, David John and wife Jeannie Hendrichs Mueggenborg and Andrew George, and her parents, Igg and Maudie Gilles. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Altar Society.
