Andrew Henry Nieland  1913-2002

Andrew Nieland, 88, died May 30, 2002 at the Carroll Health Center where he resided for four years.

Mass of the Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 3, 2002, at St. John's Church with burial at St. John's Cemetery in Arcadia. Father John Thomas officiated.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Rick Baumhover, Brian Baumhover, Neil Baumhover, Patrick Nieland, Daniel Nieland, Justus Nieland, Andrew Nieland, James Nieland and Matt Gaul.

Gift bearers were granddaughters Julie Nieland, Leanne Nieland and Kelly Gaul. Eucharistic ministers were Sister Irene Nieland and Ione Nieland. Lector was Daniel Nieland.

Twit Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He was born November 9, 1913, a son of William D. Nieland and Katherine (Grote). He attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel grade school and high school.

Mr. Nieland was married June 4, 1935 to Caroline Staiert at St. John's Church in Arcadia.

He was a member of St. John's parish in Arcadia, the Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters. In 1954, he co-chaired the St. John's Parish fund drive for the building of Kuemper Catholic High School. He enjoyed traveling the western United States.

Mr. Nieland was an avid photographer and member of the Farm Bureau.

He was a farmer in the Arcadia area from 1934 to 1997. He was a prolific basket maker, using native materials, including willow twigs, grapevines and corn husks. He learned basket making from his grandfather, Henry Nieland, of Breda and donated his baskets to many churches.

Mr. Nieland is survived by his children: Ruth King and her husband, Fred, of Conway, South Carolina, Mary C. Baumhover and her husband, Richard, of Carroll, Sister Irene Nieland, FSPA, of Cedar Rapids, Ione Nieland, of Rock Island, Illinois, Leonard Nieland and his wife Naomi, of Omaha, Nebraska, Maurice Nieland and his wife, Sue of Sioux City and Alma Gaul and her husband, David, of Bettendorf: a sister Estella Hackfort of Carroll: two sisters-in-law, Teresa Nieland of Carroll and Pearl Staiert of Carroll: 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Caroline in 1960; and a brother, Walter Nieland.
