Guthrie Center Times, Guthrie Center, Iowa, September 14, 2006

A tragic Sunday morning mishap claimed the life of Guthrie Center High School student Baylee Tews.

The 17-year-old died when her auto collided with a tractor/trailer semi just north of Bayard in southwestern Greene County.

The Greene County sheriff's department was called at 9:17 a.m. to investigate the accident at the intersection of Highway 25 and 330th Street.

Asmus, 21, of Lake City was southbound on Highway 25 in a 2001 Kenworth tractor/trailer that he was operating for Farner Bocken of Carroll when it was struck by a 1995 Buick Regal driven by Tews and owned by her mother Geri Tews of Guthrie Center. She was eastbound on the paved 330th Street.

Asmus was not injured in the collision. Tews was pronounced dead at the scene by the Greene County Deputy Medical Examiner.

The Greene County sheriff's office was assisted at the scene by the Bayard and Coon Rapids Fire Departments, Guthrie County sheriff's office, Greene County EMS, Department of Transportation employees and the Steve Sheer family.
