Dorothy Louise Becker was born March 31, 1931, a daughter of John and Theodora (Shoeppner) Janning. Dorothy was born in Carroll and received her education in Mount Carmel.

After graduating from high school, she attended Fort Dodge Beauty Academy where she graduated and began a career as a beautician. On Nov. 11, 1952, she married Arthur Becker in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. The couple was blessed with the birth of two sons.

After graduating from beauty school, she first worked at Irene’s Beauty Shop in Carroll but subsequently opened her own shop in Breda, remaining there for six years. She opened a shop near Dunlap, then later moving to the family farm where she had a salon in the home farm. In the mid - ’60s, she opened a salon in Dunlap called Dorothy’s Beauty Shop and served the Dunlap community for more than 20 years.

In the early ’70s, she and Arthur opened the Far Out Café in Dunlap, which they operated for 10 years. From this business, they established a lunch-wagon service, which they operated until 2000.

Dorothy enjoyed spending time in her gardens caring for both flowers and vegetables. Oftentimes she could be seen reading about herbal remedies, but socializing was of great interest to her. In her leisure time, she enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking, baking and canning for family and friends. Baking pies was a given talent.

Selling pies to Omahans as they passed through Dunlap on their way to the Iowa lakes for the weekend was a proud accomplishment for her in the restaurant. She and Arthur raised her two sons together and served as foster parents for 43 other children on the farm.
