Estella Hackfort, age 85, of rural Carroll, Iowa,
died Monday, January 5, 2004, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in
Carroll.
Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at
10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 8, 2004, at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll.
The celebrants will be Father James McCormick and
Father James Smith.
The casket will be taken to the church at 8:30 a.m.
Thursday to lie in state until the time of the funeral mass.
Lector will be Seminarian Nick Donohue. Soloist will
be Marcy Anderson. Eucharistic minister will be Kathy Weitze. Casket
bearers will be Gerald Schneider, Russ Pietig, Louis Hinners, Leonard
Grote, Gerald Renze and Myron Heithoff.
Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll
after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
There will be another rosary at 7 p.m. Wednesday by the parish.
Mrs. Hackfort was born on August 11, 1918, at Mt.
Carmel, Iowa, the daughter of William D. and Catherine (Grote) Nieland.
She spent her younger years in the Mt. Carmel community and attended
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Schools and graduated from St. Angela Academy
in Carroll. She was married to Herman J. Hackfort on November 30,
1939, at St. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll by Father Lambert
Schenkelberg. The couple farmed near Roselle and in 1941 moved to
their farm south of Carroll, which remains her present home. Mrs.
Hackfort was a homemaker and helped her husband with the farm work.
She was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and the Parish Ladies Guild.
She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, baking, farming, and taking
care of her family.
She is survived by her children: John H. Hackfort
of Carroll, Barbara Hackfort of Carroll, James Hackfort of Carroll,
and Lou Ann Tigges and her husband Victor, of Willey; and sisters-in-law,
Rita Hackfort of Carroll, Jeanette Jons of Omaha, Nebraska, Mercedes
Fasbender of Carroll, and Theresa Nieland of Carroll.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Herman in December 1985; a daughter, Rose Marie Hackfort, in October
1969; and two brothers, Andrew and Walter Nieland.
