Henry G. Nieland Instantly Killed
Injuries Received In a Fall Down Stairs of Legion
Hall Fatal to Breda Resident
A LIFELONG RESIDENT HERE
Henry
G. Nieland was instantly killed last Thursday evening, February
26, at about nine o'clock when he fell down the flight of steps
leading to the Legion hall. Mr. Nieland had gone up to attend a
meeting of the Wheatland Township Farm Bureau and poultry demonstration.
During the course of the meeting he decided to go
down stairs and just as he stepped down on the first step he lost
his balance and fell to the bottom. Those who heard him fall rushed
to his assistance and he was immediately taken to the office of
Dr. Van Camp where an examination revealed that life was extinct.
Mr. Nieland received a number of bruises about the face and body
and a bad scalp wound caused concussion of the brain.
Henry G. Nieland was born on a farm in Sac county
northwest of Breda June 4, 1876, and had been a resident of Breda
and vicinity all his life. During his early years he worked on the
farm for his parents and neighbors in that vicinity. During the
past 20 years he put in his time at various occupations dehorning
cattle, erecting windmills and other farm machinery, digging wells
and housemoving. He was busy most of the winter at his various occupations
and his services always were in great demand. He was a good mechanic
and was often called upon by farmers to assist them in various ways.
Besides his aged father and step-mother the deceased
is survived by one brother, F.J. Nieland of near Breda; two sisters,
Mrs. Ferdinand Steinkamp [Mary] of near Breda; and Mrs. Margaret
Mueggenborg of Okarche, Oklahoma; five half brothers and five half
sisters who are: Wm. Nieland of near Carroll, Ben A. Nieland, Joe
Nieland, Louis Nieland and Herman Nieland of near Breda; Mrs. Joe
Wittrock [Rose] of Okarche, Oklahoma, Sister M. Sigmunda [Mary Magdalene]
of Bozeman, Mont.; Sister M. Florina [Elizabeth] of LaCrosse, Wis.;
Mrs. Arthur Braun [Bertha] of Alton; and Mrs. Jacob Wittry, Jr.[Anna]
of near Glidden.
The death of Mr. Nieland comes as a great shock to
his aged father, sisters and brothers as well as other relatives
and friends. Here again we have evidence of how rapidly a life can
be snuffed out. As he passed through the door he was full of life
and energy and less than thirty seconds afterwards he had entered
into his final sleep.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning at nine
o'clock with the requiem high mass conducted by Rev. B. Eischeid,
and were largely attended. Burial took place in the Catholic cemetery.
The pallbearers were his six brothers: Frank, Wm. Ben A. Joe, Louis,
and Herman Nieland.
Relatives and friends from a distance who came to
attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Wittry, Jr., of Glidden;
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Braun of Alton; Wm. Nieland and children. Mr.
and Mrs. F.J. Schelle, Mrs. Herman Berning of Carroll; Mr. and Mrs.
Theo. Schulte, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bosold of Early; Mr. and Mrs. John
Knobbe, Miss Rose Koster of Willey; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kohorst of
Arcadia; J. P. McLaughlin of Wall Lake.
