[John]
Henry Nieland 97, Breda's oldest resident and Carroll county pioneer,
passed away at his home here in Breda at 11:45 p.m. Sunday night,
August 28th. Mr. Nieland had been in ill health about two weeks,
but bedfast only part of that time. A very active man for his advanced
age up until just recently, death came peaceful and quiet late Sunday
evening.
Born January 18, 1852, in Ramsdorf, Westphalen, Germany,
Mr. Nieland came to the United States when he was 17 years old.
He worked in Dubuque county for three years before settling in Sac
county, Iowa, in 1869.
He came to Carroll county in 1873, and located on
a farm one mile west and about 2 miles north of Breda, where he
resided until 1927, when he retired and moved to Breda. Mr. and
Mrs. Jacob Wittry and family have lived with him since Dec. 1936.
Mr. Nieland was married to Anna Berning June 15, 1875.
They were the parents of five children, three of whom are living:
Mrs. Ferdinand Steinkamp (Mary), Breda, Frank Nieland, Breda, and
Mrs. Margaret Mueggenborg, Okarche, Okla.
The deceased children are Henry, who died in 1931,
and George in infancy. Mrs. Nieland died shortly after George was
born.
On January 8. 1884, he was united in marriage to Anna
Koester. 11 children were born to this union, Sister M. Florina,
(Elizabeth), La-Crosse, Wis., Catherine, who died in infancy, Will
Nieland, Carroll; Ben Nieland, Wall Lake; Sister M. Sigmunda, (Magdalee),
Bozeman, Montana; Mrs. Joe Wittrock, (Rose), Okarche, Okla, who
passed away in 1935; Mrs. Arthur Braun, (Bertha), Alton, Iowa; Mrs.
Jacob Wittry, (Anna), Breda, Louis Nieland, Wall Lake; Joe Nieland,
Carroll; Herman Nieland, Wall Lake. Their mother died in May 1933.
Mr. Nieland also leaves many other descendants: 63
grandchildren, 83 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was the last of a family of five children.
Funeral services were held at St. Bernard Church in
Breda at 9:00 o'clock this morning, with Rev. Fr. John P. Hausman
offering the requiem mass. Internment was made in the parish cemetery.
Pall bearers were six grandsons, Andrew Nieland, Norbert
Nieland, Paul Nieland, Louis Wittrock, Arthur Braun, Jr., and Leonard
Steinkamp.
Unusually active for his age, Mr. Nieland had always
cared for his own garden and reserved the privilege of doing certain
chores around the house every day, until just recently, when his
health forced him to give up some of his routine activity.
Mr. Nieland was a familiar figure on Breda streets.
He enjoyed his daily walks downtown to visit a few hours with his
friends, both young and old, an occasional card game or two was
another he enjoyed to the fullest extent.
After undergoing a major operation at St. Anthony
hospital in Carroll in January 1947, he recovered very rapidly and
was soon back doing his usual things each day. Unless the weather
was too stormy, he attended mass at St. Bernard church every morning.
