Mrs. Bernard A. (Mary) Nieland, 87, of Breda, died at 4:25 P.m. Thursday, November 12, at the Loring Care Center in Sac City where she has been a resident for the past two years.

Mass of the Christian burial was celebrated at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 12 at St. Bernard church in Breda with the Rev. Robert McClintock as celebrant. An honor guard from the Breda American Legion Auxiliary attended the mass. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

A grandson, Donald Evers, was lector. Granddaughters Karen, Tricia and Brenda Nieland were gift bearers and Barry Nieland, Tom and John Grote were mass servers.

Serving as pallbearers were grandsons Luke Haberl, Bruce, Ken and Allen Nieland, John Jensen and Ed Evers.

Rosaries were recited on Friday at 4:00 p.m. (Ladies Guild) and 8:45 p.m. and a scriptural prayer service was conducted at 8:00 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home in Breda.

Mrs. Nieland is survived by the following children: Mrs. Florence Evers, Sac city; Mrs. Virgil (Irene) Bierl, Algona; Pat, Manson; Cyril, Sac City; Paul, Wall Lake; Mrs. Bill (Joleen) Jensen, Anamosa, and Mrs. Ken (Charlotte) Carter, Alta; 35 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceeded in death by her parents, husband on January 1, 1977; a son Arthur, killed during World War II; two brother and four sisters.

Mrs. Nieland was born December 9, 1893, in Carroll County, a daughter of Herman and Anna Rust Grote. She spent all her life in the Breda area, receiving her education at St. Bernard school, Breda. On February 10, 1914, she was married to Bernard A. Nieland by the late Rev. Luehrsman at St. Bernard church in Breda.

They farmed a mile west and three and a half miles north of Breda until their retirement in 1952. In 1969 they moved to Breda. She entered the Loring Care Center in Sac City two years ago. She was a member of St. Bernard church, the Ladies Guild and the Breda American Legion Auxiliary.
