Mathias “Math” Thelen 1902-1987

Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 10. at 1:30 p.m. at St. Bernard Church in Breda for Math Thelen, 85, of Breda, who died Sunday, June 7, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

The Revs. Thomas Munn and Marvin Boes will celebrate the Mass. Lector will be a grandson Marty Thelen. Gift bearers will be a son Delmer Thelen and a daughter Nancy Pudenz. Mass servers will be Ryan Pudenz, Curt Thelen and Nick Steinkamp.

Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda. Casket bearers will be grandsons Randy Hausman, Nick Thelen, Ed Thelen, Bob Vogt, Steve Stangl and Dan Thelen.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sharp Funeral-Home in Breda. Rosary will be recited Tuesday at 3 p.m., 4:15 p.m. by the Breda Senior Citizen Club and 8:45 p.m. There will be a scriptural prayer service at 8 p.m. Tuesday by St. Bernard Parish.

Born March 11, 1902, in Breda, he was a son of Nick and Katherine (Julich) Thelen. He spent his lifetime in the Breda community and attended schools in Breda.

On Nov. 7. 1925. he married Philomena Boes at St. Bernard Church in Breda. They farmed in the Breda area until 1965, when Mr. Thelen retired. Following his retirement, the couple continued to life on the family farm northwest of Breda. He was a member of St. Bernard Parish in Breda.

Mr. Thelen is survived by his wife, Philomena, of Breda; five daughters, Mrs. Elsie (Robert) Hausman of Halbur, Mrs. Lois (Dennis) Vogt of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Myra (Don) Stangl of Carroll, Mrs. Janet (Alan) Overgaard of Hendersonville. N.C, and Mrs. Nancy (Dave) Pudenz of Auburn; six sons, Merlin Thelen and his wife, Lois, of Omaha. Neb., Leny Thelen and his wife. Jean, of Carroll, Allen Thelen and his wife, Luella, of Carroll, Roger Thelen and his wife, Louise, of Homer. Neb., Delmer Thelen and his wife, Barb, of Fort Dodge, and Wayne Thelen and his wife, Sarah, of Marble Falls, Texas: 39 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Fred Thelen of Breda. Englebert Thelen of Estherville and Paul Thelen of Clarissa, Minn.; and four sisters, Mrs. Julia Nepple of Estherville, Mrs. Helen (Roy) Kelly of Lake View, Mrs. Leona (Don) McCaffrey of Carroll and Mrs. Hilaria (Alois) Bernholtz of Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda, in infancy; a grandson, Rick Stangl, a brother. Jack Thelen; and three sisters, Marie Thelen, Appolonia Nepple and Martha Heinrichs.
