Raymond B. Nieland, 53, of rural Wall Lake, died early Monday, Oct. 29, 1990 at Twilight Acres nursing home in Wall Lake, following a long illness.

Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday Nov. 1, at St. Bernard Church Breda. Celebrant will be Father Thomas Hart. Burial will be at St, Bernard Cemetery in Breda.

Lector for the Mass will be Roger Nieland. Gift bearers will be Sandy Nieland and Russell, Janet and Kathy Anthofer. Mass servers will be Jim Nieland. Jodi Sturm and Darin Lerriger. Casket bearers will be Kenny Nieland, Tim Nieland, Chad Kirby, Rick Muhlbauer, Kurt Muhlbauer and Mark Lerriger.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sharp Funeral Home in Breda. Rosaries will be recited a 3 and 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. There will be a Christian wake service at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday by St. Bernard Parish.

Born Oct. 5, 1937, in Wall Lake, Mr. Nieland was a son of Herman and Matilda (Thelen) Nieland. He spent his younger years in the Breda community where he attended St. Bernard Grade School and graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1955.

He had been employed by Don Koster of Breda, the former Matt Furniture Co. and the Joe P. Frank and Son Plumbing and Heating Co. of Carroll.

On Sept. 16, 1961, he was married to Elaine Schreck at St. Joseph Church in Carroll by Father Eugene Schumacher. Following their marriage the couple made their home in the Carroll area until 1967, when they moved to rural Breda.

Mr. Nieland was an avid sportsman and fisherman. He was a Little league baseball coach for many years. He was a member of St. Bernard Parish in Breda and the Carroll U.S. Army Reserve.

Mr. Nieland is survived by his wife, Elaine, of Wall Lake; sons, Barry Nieland and Brad Nieland, both of Wall Lake; daughters, Karen Hoffman and her husband, Kevin, of Carroll; Lynn Nieland and her fiancé, Randy Haberl, of Carroll and Sandy Nieland of Wall Lake, a granddaughter, Tiffany Hoffman; brothers, Robert Nieland and his wife. Helen of Sioux City, James Nieland and his wife, Donna, of Omaha, Neb., Tom Nieland and his wife, Carolyn, of Wichita, Kan., and Michael Nieland and his wife, Brenda, of Manning; and sisters, Dorothy Venteicher and her husband, Paul, of Fort Dodge. Betty Schwery of Carroll, Judy Muhlbauer and her husband, Gene, of Halbur, Jane Nieland of Ankeny. Patricia Anthofer and her husband, Cletus, of Gray, Iowa, and LiAnne Smith and her husband, James, of Alabaster, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Donald Nieland, one brother, Charles Nieland; one sister, Carol Nieland; a brother-in-law, Galen Schwery; and his father in-law and mother-in-law, William and Rose Schreck.
