Mass of the Christian burial for Walter H. Nieland of Carroll was held this afternoon, Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll.

Mr. Nieland, 81, died Friday, Nov. 28, 1997, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

The Rev. Laurence Burns officiated the service. Lector was Mary C. Baumhover. Gift bearers were Karen Hart and Laurie Schwery. Servers were Matt Nieland, Kelly Loughran and Sarah Koster. Soloist was Sherry Loughran. Eucharistic minister was Bernice Bluml.

Casket bearers were Dan Nieland, Mike Nieland, Mark Nieland, Leonard Nieland, Darol Wiederien and Ron Wadle.

Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Sharp Funeral Home of Carroll was in charge of arrangements.

A son of William and Catherine (Grote) Nieland, he was born April 18, 1916, at Carroll, and spent his lifetime in the community.

Mr. Nieland attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel graduated grade school and graduated from St. Bernard High School at Breda.

He and Viola Staiert were married in 1939. She died in 1940.

He and Teresa Wadle were married May 17, 1943, at St. Mary Church in Lake City.

The Nielands farmed north of Carroll until moving into town in 1986.

Mr. Nieland, who collected and restored antique gas engines as a hobby, was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and its Men's Club. He was also an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa, of Carroll; five children and their spouses: Kenneth and Marilyn Nieland of Worthington, Minn., Kathleen and Duane Schwery of Omaha, Neb., Rita and Eugene Huegerich of Fonda, Norm and Sherry Nieland of Carroll and Les and Kathy Nieland of Mount Pleasant; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Herman Hackfort, of Carroll; a brother-in- law: Julian Wadle, and his wife, Cecilia, of Fonda; and a sister-in- law, Catherine Wiederien, and her husband, Elmer, of Dedham.

Mr. Nieland was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a son-in-law, Donald Lillig; and his parents-in-law: Louis and Josephine Wadle.
