William
D. Nieland, 87, or Carroll died at St. Anthony Regional Hospital
at 1 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1. He was a retired farmer.
Mass of the resurrection
will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church by
the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Leo Lenz, V.F. Burial will be in Our Lady of
Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Mt. Carmel. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral
Home in Carroll after 2 p.m. Tuesday. The rosary will be recited
Tuesday at 3, 8 and 8:45 p.m., the last by the Charles Carroll Council,
Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Nieland was born at Breda
Feb. 4, 1888, a son of Henry and Anna Koester Nieland, and spent
his youth in the Breda vicinity. He was married at St. Bernard's
Church there to Catherine Grote on Jan. 16, 1912, with the late
Rev. G.H. Luersmann officiating. They settled on a farm three miles
north of Carroll. Mrs. Nieland died on Aug. 23, 1930, and he remained
on the farm until 1939.
On Feb. 18, 1941 Mr. Nieland
was married to Mrs. Rose Hoffman Hackfort, and they resided at 201
South Walnut Street, Carroll. She died Jan. 10, 1966. For the past
11 years Mr. Nieland has lived with his son-in-law and daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hackfort of Route 1, Carroll.
He was a member of Holy Spirit
Church and Holy Name Society, an honorary member of Charles Carroll
Council Knights of Columbus and also a member of the Fourth Degree
Assembly, Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Nieland is survived by
three children, Andrew, Walter and Mrs. Hackfort (Estella), all
of Carroll; 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers,
Ben and Louis Nieland of Breda and Herman Nieland of Wall Lake;
and a sister, Mrs. Jake Wittry of Breda.
Preceding him in death besides
his wives were a granddaughter, Rose Marie Hackfort in 1969; his
brothers, Henry, Joe and Frank Nieland; his sisters, Mrs. Ferdinand
Steinkamp, Mrs. Margaret Mueggenberg, Mrs. Rose Wittrock, Sr. M
Florina, Sr. M. Sigmunda, and Mrs. Art Braun; and another brother
and sister in infancy.

Mass of the resurrection for William D. Nieland,
87, of Carroll, who died September 1, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital,
was celebrated here Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Spirit Church.
Officiating was the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Leo Lenz, VF. The
Revs. G.A. Ahmann of Arcadia and James Bruch of [missing text] sanctuary.
A grandson, Maurice Nieland, was lector.
Pallbearers, also grandsons, were Leonard Nieland,
Kenneth Nieland, Norman Nieland, Lester Nieland, John Hackfort and
James Hackfort. Msgr. Lenz conducted committal rites at Our Lady
of Mt. Carmel. The Sharp Funeral Home of Carroll was in charge of
arrangements.
Relatives and friends attended the funeral from Omaha,
Neb.; LaCrosse, Wis.; Pocatello, Idaho; Kansas City, Mo.; Glenwood,
Sioux City, Iowa City, Breda, Denison, Alton, Vail, Fonda, Granville,
Marcus, Wall Lake, Carroll and surrounding community.
